The Horse and the Donkey Once, there lived a farmer who had a beautiful horse and a very ugly donkey. The horse always had plenty of fresh food to eat and was well groomed, but the donkey only had straw and was very poorly cared. One bright morning, both animals were prepared by the farmer for a long journey to the market, selling his crops. A saddle was placed upon the horse’s back for him to ride and a heavy pack of goods was loaded upon the donkey’s back. After everything was ready, the three of them started the journey. After going some distance, the donkey started to feel pain on his back. He looked up at the proud horse and asked, “This pack of goods is too heavy for me. Would you mind if I share some of this load on your back?” The horse held his head very high while the donkey was talking. “Go on, you lazy beast! I’m not a burden bearer,” said the horse. “I’m here only to carry our master.” As the day was getting hotter, the donkey grew tired and felt so much pain on his back. He groaned and was almost dragging himself, “Humph! Humph!” Then he fell to the ground after a few steps. “Oh! What has happened to the poor donkey?” thought the farmer. He realized that the load was too heavy for the donkey. So he immediately took the load off the donkey. “Oh, God! It’s really heavy. I should have been little more careful,” said the farmer to himself. Then he gave the donkey some water to drink. The farmer then picked up the pack of the goods and placed them upon the horse’s back. “Humph! Humph!” said the horse. “I should have helped the donkey to take half of the load. I made a terrible mistake.” The horse regretted that he was so arrogant. Now, he had to carry all pack of goods all alone for the remaining distance.
